Lighthouse - Work in progress

Lighthouse

Work in progress

Our second meeting occurred a few days after forming the group. And it was a bit troubled. To begin with, we formed a group of four students but after a week, one of our members dropped the unit and was replaced by another member. Everything was fine, we decided to move forward with the Lighthouse project and start our research online. Suddenly, the new member also dropped the unit and we are now three members for this project.

All good, our will to develop this project gave to us the motivation to move forward =)

On this meeting, we started the necessary arrangements for this project. We analysed some videos on Youtube and wrote down the necessary resources to bring to the next meeting.

The first lighthouse was built by the Egyptians to guide ships away from the dangerous shores. Improvements over the centuries have created lighthouses powerful enough to transmit their light over many miles. Lighthouses are primarily used to guide ships during storms or fog. Modern lighthouses use electric lights and are not usually tended by a keeper. This simple example of a lighthouse can be made quickly with items from around the home.

Lighthouses - historical information

Lighthouses

Historical information

Ancient lighthouses

Before the development of clearly defined ports, mariners were guided by fires built on hilltops. Since raising the fire would improve the visibility, placing the fire on a platform became a practice that led to the development of the lighthouse. In antiquity, the lighthouse functioned more as an entrance marker to ports than as a warning signal for reefs and promontories. The most famous lighthouse structure from antiquity was the Pharos of Alexandria, although it collapsed during an earthquake centuries later.
The intact Tower of Hercules give insight into ancient lighthouse construction.
The modern era of lighthouses began at the turn of the 18th century, as lighthouse construction boomed in lockstep with burgeoning levels of transatlantic commerce. Advances in structural engineering and new and efficient lighting equipment allowed for the creation of larger and more powerful lighthouses, including ones exposed to the sea. The function of lighthouses shifted toward the provision of a visible warning against shipping hazards, such as rocks or reefs.

Over the centuries, the improvements made by the Man have created lighthouses powerful enough to transmit their light over many miles. Lighthouses are essentially used to guide ships during storms or fog.
Nowadays, the modern lighthouses use electric devices and are not usually tended by a keeper.

Science and Technology project

Science & Technology project

The adventure of build The Lighthouse project started in the Science & Technology tutorials. Here, we were challenged to build an artefact with three electric circuits. For that, we should undertake a series of investigations regarding Science and Technology in Primary School Curriculum.

At the beginning we were very excited with the idea of building something that will be a science project for our professional portfolio. But we should confess that this responsibility, also brought some fear to the challenge. Would we be able to build an exciting artefact? And how it will work? Which artefact should we choose that better correspond to the students interests? There were so many questions to think about...
Firstly, we thought to build some traffic lights, that would definitely be useful for children to learn more about electricity and how the traffic works. But on the week 3, in our tutorial classes, we were invited to build one exemplar of traffic lights, so we gave up on this idea. We didn't want to repeat the artefact and we have to think about another thing.
Then, Reeta suggested to do a windmill. At the beginning we like the idea but at the same time it raised some concerns in our group. First because the main purpose of a windmill is to produce electricity with wind energy. So building a windmill with electric circuits, might create some misunderstanding in our future students. So, after some research online, we had the brilliant idea of building a lighthouse after reading the Learning guide and realise the potential of this project in teaching Science and Technology in a classroom. The development of a project like this in a classroom provides teachers the opportunity to explore with their students the basics of electric circuits, explore some features of local environments, and technological and scientific development, as well as many contents of other KLAs such as History, Geography, English, Mathematics and Visual Arts. And that was the conclusion of our first meeting.
