Lighthouse - Work in progress

Lighthouse

Work in progress

Our second meeting occurred a few days after forming the group. And it was a bit troubled. To begin with, we formed a group of four students but after a week, one of our members dropped the unit and was replaced by another member. Everything was fine, we decided to move forward with the Lighthouse project and start our research online. Suddenly, the new member also dropped the unit and we are now three members for this project.

All good, our will to develop this project gave to us the motivation to move forward =)

On this meeting, we started the necessary arrangements for this project. We analysed some videos on Youtube and wrote down the necessary resources to bring to the next meeting.

The first lighthouse was built by the Egyptians to guide ships away from the dangerous shores. Improvements over the centuries have created lighthouses powerful enough to transmit their light over many miles. Lighthouses are primarily used to guide ships during storms or fog. Modern lighthouses use electric lights and are not usually tended by a keeper. This simple example of a lighthouse can be made quickly with items from around the home.

  1. In the teaching and learning of science, theory of constructivism plays a crucial role. This theory helps us to know that how children learn. There are two parts of the theory where first part is called "Personal Constructivism and second one is "Social constructivism".

Personal constructivism argues that children construct rather than absorb new ideas. Learners actively generate meaning from the experiences on the basis of existing ideas (Skamp, 2012).
This view of constructivism focuses on learner itself where learner construct his learning on the base of existing knowledge.

However, Social constructivism theory explains that the social and cultural settings within which children learn also impact on them as they alter their ideas (Skamp, 2012).
Vygotsky's theory is one of the foundations of constructivism. According to Vygotsky, Social learning precedes development. He states, "Every function in child's development occurs twice, first between people and then inside the child" (Vygotsky, 1978). e focussed on the connections between people and socio-cultural context in which they act and interact in shared experiences (Crawford, 1996).

Social constructivism theory also led me think about the connection of science with literacy. Feasey & Siraj-Blatchford suggest that children need to be exposed to a range of audiences other than themselves and the teachers in oredre to engage them in using and developing generic literacy skills (Skamp, 2012). Making of lighthouse in the group can enhance children's literacy skills. Such as
Listening to others' ideas in a group
Negotiating ideas and ways of working in the making of lighthouse
    Following oral instructions
    Reading plans, circuits and diagrams
    Observing the artefact
    Reading, analysing and drawing conclusions.
    Sharing their work with others
